Competent diagnosis and management of SIBO demands an understanding of the various risk factors that predispose to its development. Addressing the underlying causes is key to effective treatment. SIBO can be a chronic or recurring problem for some patients for whom the causes cannot be completely corrected. Testing for SIBO is not always straight-forward and requires a basic understanding of breath testing, endoscopic procedures, and interpretation of results. Treatment options include prescription drugs, botanicals, elemental diet and therapeutic diets. Other conditions can masquerade as SIBO that may be more ominous, there may be co-morbidities, and a comprehensive differential diagnosis must be considered for all patients.
