This webinar will explore the strategies to prevent low platelet (thrombocytopenia) and low white blood cell (leukopenia) counts during cancer treatment. Oncologic therapies, such as chemotherapy and radiation, often lead to these hematologic complications, which can increase infection risk, bleeding, and delay treatment schedules. The seminar will focus on a functional medicine approach that emphasizes integrative and holistic strategies, including nutrition, supplementation, lifestyle modifications, and complementary therapies.

By the end of this lecture, the clinician will be aware that:

  • Risk Factors: Understand the risk factors and mechanisms leading to thrombocytopenia and leukopenia in patients undergoing oncologic treatments
  • Nutritional Strategies: Learn about specific nutritional strategies and foods that support hematopoiesis and immune function
  • Supplementation: Evaluate the evidence supporting the use of supplements and herbal remedies to prevent or mitigate low blood cell counts
  • Lifestyle Interventions: Explore lifestyle interventions and stress management techniques that can enhance overall health and support immune function during cancer treatment
  • Collaborative Care: Develop skills to create a collaborative care plan involving various healthcare practitioners to optimize patient outcomes.
